Ordering and Hair Collection Guide

At Pony Tails Jewellery, I aim to make the process of ordering and sending your keepsake materials as gentle and reassuring as possible. I know sending off your horse's hair, your donkey's mane, or your dog's fur can feel like a big step - especially when it's so special to you. Here's a simple guide to help you through every step of creating your perfect keepsake:

Step 1. Choose Your Keepsake

Browse the collection and pick the design you love.

  • If you'd like more than one of the same design, adjust the quantity in your cart.
  • If you want different designs, just add each one to your cart separately.

Step 2. Select End Caps & Fittings

  • Choose between polished or hammered sterling silver end caps (where available).
  • Select your preferred clasp, chain, or keychain fitting for the piece you've chosen.

Step 3. Add Charms

Select from a range of sterling silver charms to make your keepsake even more personal.

  • Each charm is individually priced and will be added to your total.
  • Engraved heart pendants can hold up to 20 characters, including spaces. They have a small horseshoe on the back as standard - write "None" in the Notes box if you'd prefer it plain.

Step 4. Use the Notes Section

When you're on your cart page, you'll see a Notes box - this is where you can tell me:

  • A custom size (if different from the standard)
  • If you would like the safety chain removed (bracelets)
  • If your including more than one hair or fur sample per item
  • Any other details or personal requests

Step 5. Place Your Order

Once everything is in your cart, go to Checkout.

  • Your payment details are securely stored but you won't be charged until your keepsake is complete, approved and ready to return home. This gives you full peace of mind while I lovingly create your piece.

You'll receive:

  1. An instant confirmation email with your order details and posting instructions.
  2. A second email when your hair or fur sample arrives safely.
  3. A final email with a photo of your finished keepsake and notice that payment is about to be processed.

Step 6. Hair & Fur Collection Instructions

No need to wash the hair - I will gently clean and prepare all horse/donkey hair upon arrival (Note: I do not wash pet hair/fur)

Tip: If your sample is irreplaceable, keep a small portion back for peace of mind.

Tail Hair (Horse or Pony):

  • Cut from the underside near the dock so it's less noticeable.
  • I need at least 43 cm (17") of hair - enough to wrap around your wrist twice and about as thick as your thumb - for all braided items (bracelets, necklaces, keychains).
  • Secure the cut end with a band and leave the rest loose (please do not plait, braid, or tie the full length).

Tail Hair (Donkey)

Donkey tail hair is naturally shorter, finer, and less abundant than horse hair. This means it's not suitable for braided keepsakes like bracelets or keychains - but it's perfect for a tail hair tassel. Please send as much as you can spare for the best result. Secure at the cut end with a band

Mane or Forelock Hair:

Ideal for tassels when tail hair is limited - send as much as possible for the best result. Secure the cut end with a band.

Tassels

Perfect for when less hair is available. Ideally, send the same amount as you would for a bracelet.

  • As standard, tassels are made to 14 cm in length (subject to hair length supplied).
  • You can trim yours to the perfect length once it's home.
  • If your sample is shorter or finer than ideal, I'll still use every strand you send – nothing is ever wasted.
  • Secure the cut end with a band

Pet Fur / Resin Keepsakes:

  • Only a small pinch is needed for resin keepsakes - and yes, I can make these with horse, pony, donkey, or dog fur.Note: Pale or very light hairs may appear slightly translucent once set in resin. This is a natural effect that creates a soft, delicate finish.
